Helen Keller spent her life advocating for people with disabilities, traveling the world, and writing.
- In 1915 she and George A. Kessler founded the Helen Keller International (HKI) organization. This organization is devoted to research in vision, health and nutrition.
- In 1920, she helped to found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
- In 1980, during her birth centennial, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed June 27, her birthday, to be celebrated as Helen Keller Day.
