Article: Oral Intake of Low-Molecular-Weight Collagen Peptide Improves Hydration, Elasticity and Wrinkling in Human Skin: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

Objective: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the effect of ingested collagen peptides on the skin
Methods: 70 women aged 40-60 were given a catfish-derived collagen formula daily for 12 weeks.
Results: Skin hydration, skin elasticity, and wrinkle reduction were greater in the test group than in the placebo group at six weeks and 12 weeks.
Conclusions: 1000 mg of collagen is a functional food and if ingested daily can improve skin elasticity, hydration, and wrinkling.
My Take: Why do I, a podiatrist, care about collagen’s effect on wrinkles? Well, I don’t. But skin hydration and elasticity are key factors in wound healing and wound prevention. We health professionals who work in wound care know that the more hydrated and elastic the skin is, the more it can withstand and recover from injuries.
